Padres scout Bobby Filotei listened to part of the game on the way home, finishing it on the TV once he arrived, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

This was Game 6 of the 2011 NLCS, the one where the player he signed, David Freese, went 3 for 4, with a double and home run, winning NLCS MVP honors and leading the Cardinals on to the World Series.

"You get butterflies," Filotei told The Union-Tribune as the Cardinals got set to meet the Rangers in the Fall Classic. "Every time he gets a hit, you pump your fist a little bit - that a boy. My kids were in bed, but quietly inside, I was jumping up and down."

Filotei's fist had its work cut out for it in the series to come. In that one, the Filotei signee Freese went on to become the World Series hero with clutch hits in the most dramatic of moments.

Filotei went on to his scouting career after a playing career of his own. Filotei's playing career, though, never neared the heights that his future signee Freese would reach. Filotei's playing career lasted just three seasons, never seeing the majors.

Filotei's professional career began in 1990, signed by the Reds as an undrafted free agent out of the University of South Alabama.

At South Alabama in a May 1989 game, Filotei knocked in the game-winning run by working a walk. The next year, Filotei helped tie a contest

with a double.

With the Reds, Filotei started at rookie Billings, hitting just .197 over 57 games. He moved the next season to single-A Cedar Rapids, the shortstop improving his average to the still-poor .216.

Filotei played in just one more season, 1992. He got into 10 games back at Cedar Rapids, as well as seven at single-A Charleston, ending his playing career.

Filotei, though, stayed in the game, as a scout. By 1995, he was a scouting supervisor with the Reds. By 2002, he was with the Padres as a territorial scout. It was in 2005 that he signed Freese, Freese moving on to the Cardinals in a 2007 trade. Then, in 2009, Filotei was Padres Scout of the Year.
