Tom Jones, Record Book - 3060

It was Sam Houston State's first no-hitter in a decade and Tom Jones had a part in it.

Starting this April 21, 1990 game against Northwestern State was teammate Richie Beard. Finishing it was Jones, according to the Sam Houston record book. It was a game Sam Houston won 2-0.

Jones took his success at Sam Houston on to the pros, but he couldn't keep that success up. He ended up playing just a single season as a pro, getting 19 outings.

Jones turned pro that year in 1990, taken by the Phillies in the 33rd round of the draft out of Sam Houston.

At Sam Houston, Jones earned all-conference honorable mention honors in 1989 and second-team honors in 1990. He posted a team-best 2.45 ERA in 1990, along with 31 strikeouts.

His ERA that year is still the seventh-best season ERA in team history, according to the team's record book.

With the Phillies, Jones was sent to short-season Batavia. There, the pitcher got into 19 games, starting six. He ended with a 2-4 record and a 4.92 ERA. He also played a game in the outfield, and got two at bats. He went 0 for 2. It was his only year as a pro.
